The day before the T-Mobile G1 hit stores, Google today released the operating system Android as an open source project, allowing developers to have full access to the core of the platform.

?Android is the first free, fully customizable open source mobile platform. Android also offers: an operating system, middleware (software that connects two different and separate applications), and the main keys for mobile applications. It also contains a rich set of APIs that allow developers to develop large applications ?describes the special page dedicated to the project (although it is not really the first open source OS).

The code, which has a total of 2.1GB of data, must be worked on Linux or Mac if you are thinking of developing something. Or, inspect the code in the version online.
