Six risks of using cracked programs | Security

Malware discovered by security firm Malwarebytes in the past week has once again raised the dangers that pirated software can bring to the user. The new threat disguises itself as an alleged cracked version of the Adobe Zii program to deceive victims and invade macOS, a system considered to be safe by most malicious programs. Its objective is to open a secret passageway to facilitate remote hacking on the machine.

This is one of the problems arising from computer hacking. Still, almost half (46%) of software used in Brazil is not licensed, according to the most recent survey by the Business Software Alliance (BSA), an entity that brings together companies such as Apple, Microsoft and IBM. See six consequences of using cracked programs on Windows or Mac.

1. Pirated program can be virus

The biggest danger of installing pirated programs on your computer is the risk of encountering something fraudulent like the fake Adobe Zii, which has camouflaged malware. Cracked software is, by definition, packages with modified code and, not always, the changes made by the cracker are limited to circumvent licensing. According to experts, nothing prevents the program from bringing other internal changes to monitor the computer or open a breach (backdoor) to facilitate remote execution of commands by hackers.

2. Installation requires deactivation of antivirus

Pirated software can pose dangers even if they are not fake versions. This is because, in general, the installation of unlicensed apps requires the temporary deactivation of the computer's antivirus, something that can leave the machine vulnerable, even if only for a short period. In the meantime, threats lurking in infected routers, for example, can take advantage of the low guard to attack your device.

3. Download source may pose threats

In addition to the program itself, it is common for the source of the pirated download to be of concern to the user. Since cracked software is distributed via blogs or torrent repositories, it is difficult to verify its integrity before being provided for download. In addition, these pages often have many intrusive advertisements, facilitating the action of auxiliary malware, such as adware that invades the PC to display advertising.

4. Lack of updates creates security problems

Even if they are not viruses, pirated programs can leave your computer exposed to external threats. As crack most of the time requires stopping new updates, the software is unaware of possible bug fixes released by the manufacturer. These updates are essential to address vulnerabilities discovered by the community and prevent them from being exploited by hackers. Without security updates, pirated programs become potential entry points for criminals.

5. Functions may not operate well

Pirated software can also bring usability problems that interfere with day-to-day work. These programs often use generic versions of the installer that are not always 100% compatible with your computer. In addition, cracked software can eliminate functions that interfere with the system that circumvents activation, such as hardware acceleration. In this way, pirated apps may malfunction, in addition to not taking advantage of the processing power of your PC.

6. Jobs can be lost without saving

Another consequence of using pirated programs is the possibility of losing jobs without notice. Unlicensed apps can be unstable, presenting bugs such as abrupt closing before saving. In addition, even after saving a copy of the task in progress, errors in the save process can corrupt the file and prevent it from being opened later. Problems of the type are a nightmare for pirated Photoshop image editing or cracked Premiere video editing, for example.
