What3words: how the 'new address' used by Airbnb works | Maps and location

What3words is a system created to simplify physical addresses around the world that is already (and used by hosting and delivery services, such as Airbnb. The new technology aims to create a unique location pattern using three words, both for conventional addresses and for houses, apartments and commercial establishments, as well as for locations far from urban centers. The solution looks like the latitude and longitude system or Google's Plus Code, as it does not require a street name, number or neighborhood. However, What3words dispenses with numbers and uses only one set of three words.

Each square meter on the planet can have a simplified What3words address, which can be easily remembered, shared and noted on paper. The What3words address of Cristo Redentor, for example, corado.nisto.rindo.

When playing the three words in the app, it is possible to get the point on the map and export the location to Google Maps to start the route. Likewise, the program on the cell phone can be used to find the What3words address of any conventional address.

Airbnb sealed a partnership with the government of Mongolia to test What3words to advertise hosting. The African country does not have conventional addresses and has a nomadic culture that makes it difficult to share addresses on the platform. What3words is therefore expected to facilitate sharing the location of rented homes.

In the USA, the Onibag delivery service uses What3words to inform customers of package collection points and delivery points. In addition, there are cases of film production teams that have already used the three letter system to indicate filming locations in England, country of origin of the service.

Step 1. Download the What3words app, available for Android and iPhone (iOS) and use the search button to open the search tool. Enter the set of three letters corresponding to the address you want to find and click on the result to open it on the map.

Step 2. Use the buttons at the bottom to share the location with someone, bookmark or get directions. In the latter case, the app will redirect you to an alternative navigation program already installed on your phone, such as Waze or Google Maps.

Step 3. Use the search tool as well to convert a common address to What3words format. Position the map at the exact desired point to obtain the three corresponding letters on the footer.
