A shared audio on Reddit created a lot of controversy in May. A metallic voice spoke a name, which some people understood to be Yanny, and others Laurel. The controversy was shared on social networks, on TV shows and moved the discussion wheels. After much speculation, an expert explained to The Verge that the confusion was, in fact, a stimulus of ambiguous perception, caused by the different individual mechanics of each person's audio. In the end, The New York Times found that the word was Laurel, a kind of wreath used on the head, usually as a sign of victory.

In the month of August, users of Twitter, Instagram and Facebook came across a photo that created doubt: after all, is it a blue door with a green door or a beach? Even after generating thousands of shares on social networks, the mystery has yet to be solved. Experts consulted by TechTudo suggest that the figure has been modified in editing programs to look like a beach, and that it is more likely to be a door. However, the photographer responsible for capturing the image was not found to resolve the doubt.

The photo of a mouth covered with three painted nail fingers moved WhatsApp in September. The color of the lipstick and nail polish of the character changed with each action performed by the user in the image, such as downloading, opening or forwarding. The tonal variation was due to the length of the photo, saved in PNG, a format that allows you to add transparency elements. In this case, the transparency was applied to the mouth and nails, causing them to change color according to the background in which they were inserted.

Also in September, the photo of a transparent car generated doubts on social networks. A black car was so well polished that it reflected the image of the garden around it, like a mirror, causing the vehicle to disappear into the scene. Many doubted the veracity of the image, which accused the effect of being montage due to distortions in the reflection. According to experts consulted by TechTudo, the chances of the photo being real are high, since the distortions are caused by the curves of the bodywork of the vehicle, and the angle of the image capture favored the perfect mirroring.

On Twitter, users were unsure whether an image containing vibrant geometric elements was a photo, a video or a GIF, as it appears to be in motion. This movement, according to a scientist, is nothing more than an illusion of optics that occurs within the visual cortex. She explained that a competition between neurons that color and shape opens space for the neurons responsible for the movement to start acting, giving the sensation that the figure is moving.

In November, the photo of an animal even confused Google's image search engine. The figure shows a black cat sitting on the floor with its head tilted, but an illusion of ethics makes the animal look like a crow. A closer look to deliver that it is a feline, but Google did not identify the difference and, when searching the image in the reverse search, the tool showed the bird as a result. The confusion happened because the system analyzes points of reference, such as lines and textures, and, in general, the animal photographed resembles more a crow, and not a cat.
