Last year alone, 663 million downloads of the TikTok app were made. Over the same period, Facebook and Instagram had 711 million and 444 million new installations, respectively. The popularity of the software comes mainly from Asian countries like China and India but the service has also topped the list of most downloaded apps in the United States.

TikTok is a platform that lets you record and post 15-second videos focusing on voice acting and humor. It works like a social network: users can interact with each other, comment and like posts from third parties. The app's proposal makes it a direct competitor to other video-focused services such as Instagram Stories and Snapchat.
Developed by Chinese company ByteDance, TikTok merged with former Musical.ly in August last year, in a deal estimated at $ 800 billion to $ 1 billion. The service began monetizing its services in January with the display of advertisements. The goal is to reach 500 million active users per month through advertisements displayed to a mostly young audience base.

Because of TikTok's growing success, competitors like Facebook may be looking for their own versions of the app. According to the TechCrunch portal, the company launched an application called Lasso in November last year. Focused exclusively on creation and the teen audience, the software would be available at the official App Store and Google Play app stores for iPhone (iOS) and Android phones, but limited to US users.
