Manufactured by Piriform, the same developer as CCleaner, Recuva is a program focused on recovering deleted files from anywhere on the PC. Although not very beautiful in design, the software is still one of the main options for finding photos, videos, documents and all sorts of lost items, either on the PC hard drive or on an external device such as USB stick and external hard drive. The free version offers the main functions, and is available for Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista and even older Windows XP. There is also a portable version, which does not require installation.

Cleverfiles Disk Drill is a software that is easier to use and more attractive to design. It finds duplicate files and works quickly: within seconds, it already displays gigabytes of deleted data, all organized in folders. In addition, it offers extra tools to, for example, rebuild a corrupted partition. The app also lets you scan an Android or iPhone (iOS) phone connected to the computer. EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard is a program with a pleasing look and versatile functionality: It promises to recover data even from a deleted, hidden, lost or RAW partition. In addition, it allows you to scan connected storage devices via the USB port and release up to 500 MB of recovery on free versions for Windows and macOS, plus an additional 1.5 GB for sharing the program link on social networks.

TestDisk is an open source tool that offers the main functions expected for a data retriever. Completely free, the software has versions for Windows, macOS, Linux and even for classic DOS. The program allows you to recover and rebuild the hard drive boot sector, as well as fix problematic partitions and recover all types of deleted files from FAT, exFAT, NTFS and ext2 systems. However, the interface can scare novice users as the operation is entirely via the command line.
