1. Why does Facebook ban posts about nationalism and / or white separatism?

Facebook has received strong criticism in recent weeks for hosting the live broadcast of a two-mosque attack on New Zealand. Attack videos continue to circulate across the social network, under public criticism and institutions regarding lack of platform oversight. In response, Facebook reported that, until last week, it had removed 1.5 million copies of the video from the bombing and 1.2 million of these were intercepted at upload time.

By announcing the ban on white nationalism and separatism, the company indicated that its policies already banned the treatment of hatred of people motivated by racial, ethnic or religious characteristics, including white supremacy. But they were not applied to expressions of nationalism and white separatism because we thought of broader concepts of nationalism and separatism. In dialogue with civil society and experts, Facebook concluded that nationalism and separatism are directly linked to white supremacy and organized hatred.

The Facebook note also stated that, despite the advances, there is still much to be done to improve and streamline the process of removing audio content from platforms: Unfortunately, there are always people who try to bypass our systems to share the hate.

2. What content does Facebook consider to be white nationalist and / or separatist?

All content that users post or create on the social network (articles, videos, comments, posts, pages and groups) must respect the platform's new guidelines. In its announcement, Facebook said users "would still be able to show pride in their ethnic inheritance." According to a Facebook spokesman, this means that people can still express their pride in the United States or celebrate their Irish reasons, for example, but they cannot promote nationalism and white separatism.

3. How will content be removed from the platform?

Removal of content must occur from user reports. Facebook will rely on these reports as it does not have enough technology to identify the offending post automatically.

4. What is the punishment for those who put the content?

Facebook will exclude content that violates its new policies, but should not ban from the social network who posted the denounced material ie separatists and nationalists will still have platform access. The news is that Facebook will redirect people seeking terms associated with the White Supremacy page of Life After Hate, an organization founded by former violent extremists who provide intervention in crisis situations, education, support groups and outreach.
