Microsoft will terminate support for Office 2010. What to do?

Office 2010 users, we know you are there. By 2017, according to a survey published by the Spiceworks IT market, Office 2010 was being used in 83% of companies surveyed. Most companies seemed to have a mix of active Office versions, with Office 2007 the second most prevalent, with 68%.

While Microsoft's time and relentless efforts to get users to switch to Office 365 subscriptions have certainly changed data over the past two years, it is very likely that Office 2010 is still popular. And if you are one of these Office 2010 users, you may have seen this screen appear recently when you start Word or another Office program.

That's right: Microsoft Office 2010 support ends on October 13, 2020. That means there's no more technical support, no patches, no security updates. The good news is that you have many options and most have reasonable prices. The news is that each new version is getting closer and closer to subscription-based products, which means that eventually subscriptions will be the only option available.

We will guide you through these options so you can decide what to do.

What happens if I stay in Office 2010?

If you are determined to maintain Office 2010, you can do so as long as you are comfortable with the risks. Because Microsoft will no longer support you with bugs and patches, you will need comprehensive and aggressive antivirus protection software. Another obstacle you may face is incompatibility with some of the latest programs and file formats. However, keep in mind that almost all Windows products can be exported regardless of individual compatibility.

Can I switch to Office 365 Online?

Office 365 Online is a free web-based version of Office. However, a limited and reduced version lacks many of the features of the full version. This option works well for students and new users who want to "try before you buy" and try the online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. However, unless your needs are very basic, you probably would not want to run your business with these online applications.

Should I upgrade to an Office 365 subscription?

You could, but it's paid. Office subscriptions include:

  • Office 365 Business Essentials for $ 5.00 per user, per month
  • Office 365 Business for $ 8.25 per user, per month
  • Office 365 Business Premium for $ 12.50 per user per month

You can compare all versions of Office 365 on the Microsoft website.

note: Business Essentials provides only free web and mobile versions, plus four special services: Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams. If you do not need these four services, save your money and use the free version of Office 365 web / online.

Office 365 Home versions include:

  • Office 365 Home for $ 100 a year
  • Office 365 Personal for $ 70 a year
  • Office Home & Student 2019 for $ 150 per year (we saw discounts of $ 100 s times)

Home versions cost more than Business versions because they have different user features and licenses. You can compare Home, Personal, and Student versions of Office 365 on the Microsoft Web site and decide which package meets your needs.

In addition to the 365 Business and Home versions, Microsoft also offers four Enterprise plans for corporations and small businesses: 365 Plus, 365 E-1, 365 E-3 and 365 E-5. All subscription-based, these plans provide far more ?special services? than the other 365 plans.

Can I upgrade to Office 2019?

Office Home & Business 2019 Digital (tax free) costs $ 249 from Microsoft and Office Professional 2019 costs $ 440 (note that prices are always subject to change).

Office 2019 comes with many caveats. Unlike Office 365, which is regularly updated with new features, Office 2019 does not. You get the features that came with the original version released in October 2018 and no more. Office 2019 does not include OneNote, SharePoint Designer, or InfoPath. When the next version of the desktop is released, you must re-purchase it if you want new features.

Also, 2019 is not supported by Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. And for those who run networks or install software on multiple drives, Office 2019 can only be installed on the system drive – that is, drive C: (normally) and that location cannot be changed.

Here's the real incentive: You must have internet access to install and use this product, unlike 2010, which works offline.
