IDC estimates 30% annual drop in iPhones sales; Huawei outperforms Apple [atualizado 2x: Canalys fala em 23%, IHS em 16%]

Last night, Apple released its financial results for the second fiscal quarter of 2019, but it no longer reports how many products it sold per unit just splits the segments by revenue. This way, we can't officially know how many iPhones were sold from January to March.

What we do know from the numbers is that the iPhone had a 17.3% annual drop in revenue (totaling $ 31.1 billion). And, as the entire line is now more expensive, it is only natural that the annual drop in units was (well) steeper than that.

Based on market research, the International Data Corporation (IDC) estimates exactly that: in the first quarter of 2019, Apple would have sold 36.4 million iPhones which would represent an incredible annual decline of 30.2%.

THE Samsung, a Xiaomi and the OPPO They also had annual sales declines of 8.1%, 10.2% and 6% respectively. Who fired positively was the Huawei, 50.3%, followed by Alive with 24%. Overall, however, the smartphone market as a whole retracted 6.6% at the beginning of the year.

The drop in Apple's soaring hike from Huawei obviously caused them to change positions in the rankings. If China continues at this rate, it could even threaten Samsung's leadership in the not too distant future.

From January to March, IDC estimates that all manufacturers together sold a total of 310.8 million smartphones. the sixth consecutive quarter of decline in the segment.

Update 5/1/2019 2:58 PM

Now it was the turn of Canalys publish his survey, and it has quite a few different numbers from IDC.

Canalys on smartphones

The two firms almost agree on the overall decline in the smartphone segment, differing by only 0.2 percentage point although Canalys cites a larger total of 313.9 million handsets sold in the period.

Canalys, however, points to a larger drop in Samsung sales (-10%) and much smaller declines in Apple (-23.2% to 40.2 million iPhones sold) and Xiaomi (-1.3%). . OPPO, which for IDC fell from one year to c, rose 6.4% in Canalys' survey.

Go figure.

Update II 05/03/2019 s 08:30

What gives, Apple no longer disclose the official numbers of sales of iPhones. Now it was the turn of IHS to disclose your research (via 9to5Mac), and she points to an even lower annual Ma drop than Canalys.

IHS on smartphones

The total market was not very different from the others (down 6.3% year-on-year to 323.8 million smartphones sold in the quarter), but IHS says Apple sold 43.8 million iPhones which would represent a drop. annual ?only? 16%. almost half of IDC's bet.

We also had variations here and there on the other brands, but the consensus among all that Samsung had a retraction of 8-10% and that Huawei actually shot up in a year.
