ZFS improvements are on the way for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Canonical intends to bring next Ubuntu LTS, the full implementation of ZFS.

About 4 months ago, Canonical announced that it was starting to test ZFS file system technology. ZFS improvements are on their way to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS In August of this year (2019), Canonical said it would start testing ZFS experimentally on Ubuntu 19.10 so that operating system users could test it, so they could give feedback on how the file system would look. behaving in Ubuntu.

Currently, on Ubuntu 19.10, at the time of installation you can choose whether or not to use ZFS. However, installing the system in this mode results in the full use of the hard drive and cannot be used with other formats such as EXT4 or dual boot. It is hoped that on 20.04 LTS you may have this possibility.

Also expected in the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS work cycle is the full implementation of ZFS, as well as the possibility of using LVM together. Another thing that is being worked on, Zsys cards, which will make it possible to use an EFI (ESP) partition with dynamic / boot resizing, GRUB integration fixes, unmount / unmount appropriately, among other items. For more details, you can consult the Zsys cards README. With the complete implementation of ZFS, starting with Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa we can have, for example, easier and easier to handle restore points.
