Camera test: XZ Premium, S8 +, HTC U11, G6, Pixel and iPhone 7 Plus

Definitions

We use the native app of each smartphone to make the photos. We adjust the resolutions to the maximum supported by each model. We have not made any additional software adjustments, nor have we used automatic mode. Light / exposure adjustment was done by touching the screen, not manually.

We made three captures of each figure at the same time. We selected the best ones for this test. We took all images to Photoshop to correct errors in angles that caused the focal difference of each lens. As a reference for this test, we are using a Canon SLR, the EOS 5D Mark III, in connection with the Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8.

Before you start: Remember that the sequence of each photo in each topic is different. Therefore, the smartphone 1A is not the same as the 2A, and so on.

Scene 1: HDR (Dynamic Range)

High contrast scenes have a particular challenge: mobile phones have smaller sensors that need to correct the dynamic range evenly. The result in this context causes the background light to shift to the first, controlling exposure.

Scene 2: Macro

The macro photo can show the limits of each device. In this image it is possible to evaluate the detailed reproduction of the foreground and the details of the image. The macro was made with a touch in the center of the sunflower.

Scene 3: Dawn

In this scene we have a few more details to analyze: we have shadows, contrast and exposure as well as several details to analyze. We mark the region based on the photo taken with the Canon camera, which area is to be analyzed and taken into account when comparing mobile phones.

Scene 4: Night Mode

In night scenes smartphones usually have some problems. To compensate for dark areas, device lenses become excessively sensitive at ISO, making reading errors sharp. Another challenge here is artificial lighting, as the cell phone has to be able to manage the white balance properly, in addition to the lack of light and isolated spots.
