Instagram tests messaging app 'rival of Snapchat', says website | Social networks

Instagram is developing a new messaging application called Threads, according to technology site The Verge. The app is geared towards interacting with the closest people through text messages, photos and videos. The user may also share other information such as location, speed, movement and battery life. Threads be a complementary app to Instagram to chat with profiles listed as "best friends" on the social photo network.

According to screenshots leaked by The Verge, Threads has an interface similar to Instagram's Direct: the app displays the friend's message feed and beside it a green dot to indicate that the contact is online. It also allows the user to view a person's recent stories straight through the app.

Threads will have mobile camera access to send photos and videos in real time to the best friends list. According to the website, the app will have the option to share activity status automatically or manually to contacts. If the user chooses to enable the Automatic Updates button, the application will regularly update various information such as its location and battery. Status options include Busy, Watching TV, and Bored.

If you choose manual update, the status will be displayed in the main feed near the messages. The initiative automates status sharing through mobile or touch sensors. According to The Verge's finding with expert sources, Threads will not show the location in real time, but rather warn that the person is "on the move".

Despite the low popularity in Brazil, Snapchat is one of the favorite apps of young people in the United States. The social network attracts teens with the multimedia chat tool to send snaps or text message chat.

Reports indicate that Snapchat users have more uptime and engagement than Instagram users because of conversations with friends. So Threads would be a Facebook bet to bring a more enhanced chat tool to Instagram.
