WhatsApp changes the spelling of 'online' and users comment on the web; understand | Social networks

WhatsApp went back to changing the spelling of online status in the Android version. On Google's platform and WhatsApp Web, the messenger had started displaying "online", with hfen (-) in the middle of the word. According to some dictionaries and the Portuguese Language Orthographic Vocabulary (VOLP) of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL), the correct spelling of the word "online", with the separation. It is widely accepted, however, to write "online" all together.

In English, the source language of the term, online spelling is considered correct, according to the Cambridge Dictionary. When the word came, with the rise of personal computers and the Internet, the original writing was "online" with the hfen, but the form eventually fell out of favor.

Twitter users noticed the messenger change, and made joking complaints. It is not yet known whether WhatsApp's goal is to gradually expand the change and whether "online" status will reach iPhone users (iOS) or return to Android. WhatsApp Web continues to show separate spelling.
