Jason Cornewell, chief designer, said Inbox was a set of new solutions and so it was released separately. While there is a huge concern about users of the Gmail service, in the long run, as new features are added to Inbox users will naturally use it. According to Jason, all users are expected to choose to use Inbox instead of Gmail for years to come. Check out an interview interview below:

The way people use email has changed dramatically since we launched Gmail. With Inbox, we've done a lot of research into how most people are using email today. What we found was that email works like a to-do list for many people, we also noticed smartphone usage is beginning to encompass desktop usage. We also note that the current format of email has a very negative perception to users. We launched Inbox as a separate product because we don't think we can solve these issues just by adding more features to Gmail. We needed to start from scratch to build a tool that really helps you stay on top of your life.

It was commented during the interview, the solutions that Google has been developing to integrate Gmail with Outlook, Server and Yahoo, along with the option to unify all these accounts in one inbox. Future application updates will allow you to change the notification ringtone, and download multiple attachments at once.

So, are you using Gmail or Inbox?
