Every year the Society for Information Display (or SID group of scientists, engineers, researchers and technology executives to enact screen technologies) organizes the Display Industry Awards, where the most notable innovations of the year in the segment are laureates.
In 2019, at the 24th edition of the award, one of the main winners was the iPhone? iPad? Mac? No, no: it was the Apple Watch Series 4.
The small screen of the watch left the event with one of the ?Display of the Year?, delivered to the "components with the most significant technological advances or the most extraordinary features" even recognition, moreover, given last year to the iPad Pro.
The main reason for Apple Watch's victory, besides its reduced edges, is its name: LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide, or low temperature crystalline oxide), the new technology employed by Apple that enhances the screen's power consumption and allows even with a 30% greater area over its predecessors, Ma's new watch offers energy efficiency and a even longer battery life compared to Series 3 generation.
Below we translate the full justification given by SID for the award:
While retaining the original design characteristic, the fourth generation of Apple Watch brings several refinements, combining hardware and software enhancements in a unique and unified way. The impressive 30% larger display (by 40mm or 44mm depending on the model) integrates perfectly with the smaller, slimmer body, while the new interface brings more information and deeper detail. The screen is a fundamental part of Apple Watch, and the Series 4 enhances this aspect more than ever. The challenge for designers was to make larger panels without increasing the clock size or compromising the battery. The thinner edges allow a 30% larger viewing area, while a new display technology called LTPO helps with energy efficiency, helping users get through the day with just one charge.
In addition to Apple Watch, two other products received the ?Display of the Year? award, both of which feature microLED technology: The Wall TV from Samsung, and Crystal LED Display System solution from Sony.
