Android for Beginners – Difference between app and widget

Widgets and Apps (apps) are distinct types of programs that run on an Android device and they serve different purposes. Widgets are basically self-contained mini programs that are installed and run on a device's home screen.

Widgets tend to perform simple functions – like the clock widget that shows time and temperature – but they do so dynamically that you don't have to touch anything to update them. In addition to displaying the most relevant information, widgets can act as control switches for another part of the system. For example, a widget can be used to turn the phone's Bluetooth function on or off (as you can see in the screenshot below).

When you hold down the free space on the screen, you can select the widget you want to select for your home screen.

Apps, on the other hand, are usually programs that you can open with a single tap. Applications can be multifunctional, such as a program that lets you create and edit spreadsheets on your device. Some apps include their own widgets to install on the phone's home screen, showing real-time app information – like a weather app that has a widget to show current conditions and storm alerts in the area.

In these screenshots, you can see different widgets (Twitter, Google, and Yahoo! Finance) in the middle of apps.

Certain widgets can help you save battery power on your phone by utilizing the power-hungry features of the app. However, running a series of widgets that constantly scan the Internet for current information can also drain your battery.

Although there are plenty of widgets that monitor the battery, you can check it yourself. In most Android versions, click the Menu button, select Settings and challenges About device, Select Battery usage to see the current battery state of the phone, and which software is drawing the most power from it.
