Unicode, the body responsible for the emoji standard, released on Friday (11), the most used faces on the Internet. The joy-tear emoji (9.9%), the red heart (6.6%) and the heart-eyed face (4.2%) appear at the top of the list as preferred by users. The survey found that newer emojis are not used as often as compared to older stickers.

The study averaged the frequency of use of each emoji across different platforms to rank them in the popularity ranking. The report aims to facilitate which emoticon proposals the consortium should approve in the future, and to inform people who propose smiley which images have the highest acceptance rate. This is the first time Unicode has unveiled the most widely used emojis on the Internet.

To make the list, the consortium considered the average frequency that emojis are used on various platforms and software. The drawings were then organized into groups and ordered based on the frequency comparison of the emoji that are at the top of the list. For images with varying skin tone, Unicode considered only one icon to represent the variations.
The survey concluded that recently released smiley faces appear less than older ones, as it takes some time for news to be available on all platforms. The ten most used emojis are generally optimistic, with smile or heart images present in most positions. The only exception is the face crying loudly.
