Film stabilizers are excellent for making cinema-quality video and are increasingly accessible. Here on the site, we have already tested several gimbal stabilizers designed for use with smartphones, the most varied and for different tastes. We even made a video explaining who each of them intended for.

Now it's time to try a DSLR camera stabilizer and see how a camera made exclusively for photo and video can benefit from such a gadget.
Here we receive the Feiyutech a2000, a sturdy stabilizer that can be mounted for two-handed or single-handed use. The camera we used was the Panasonic Lumix Dc-gh5. In the pictures on our Instagram profile we used a 5D when we were still learning the assembly process.
DSLR x Smartphone
There are several differences in using a gimbal stabilizer for DSLR and one of smartphones though, although it also brings similarities in use.
Besides the differential, the gadget came cheaper than many of its competitors.
For starters, the stabilizer we tested needed to be assembled, with a few screws and separate parts. It has required extra attention at this stage, if you assemble the wrong equipment, it simply will not work properly and you may damage its mechanism.
As with smartphones, I need to keep the axes balanced before turning on the device, the difference that takes much longer in the case of a DSLR. And if you do not balance, see him trying to balance but without success. I already found it a bit annoying to have to balance the smartphone, which is a small piece, adjust the camera position much more complicated and at first took a long time. The good part is the assembly time is decreasing as you get the hang of it.
To whom he indicated
The fact that it is heavier than a smartphone stabilizer and shooting for a long time can be tiring, making using it recommended for those who really want a better cinematic result.
Still, our experience has shown that it fits into a semi-professional but cost-effective category for what it offers. In addition, it is more expensive than a smartphone gadget, plus an indication that it is intended for productions.
Those looking for a mobile stabilizer are thinking more about news content production, vlogs or event coverage. It's also common for people to use for hobby, day-to-day filming, a sightseeing trip or just to improve their filming going to their Instagram. Basically, for some people it has the same function as a simple selfie stick.
If you have a movie project that uses a DSLR, a2000 can help you
To use anything the size of Feiyutech a2000, you have to be determined to take better quality shots, a device that requires more dedication to the shots that will be recorded, much less casual. With equipment like this you need to plan your takes before you leave carrying about three pounds on your arm.
This is not unique to that, but I see it much more as a resource for anyone who wants to record a series, or do professional filming than for a hobbyist. If you buy such a device, it must have a clear purpose and already have the necessary equipment solutions for it. You already have to have a project and have it defined how it fits into it.
Generally speaking, it is suitable for those who work with film, with a rhythm and aesthetic issues less used in factual journalism.
If you want to buy a stabilizer for DSLR, you need to be very clear in your mind if you really need the item and if it fits your needs, because there is always the possibility of purchasing a stabilizer for smartphone. It is increasingly common to see phones with better cameras and more affordable prices.
Smartphone or DSLR stabilizer, which one to buy?
If you have an excellent DSLR and a cinematic project that needs a lot of quality, there is no doubt that your recording will be far superior with this combination of equipment. Now if you need something more casual and want to smooth out your movements, a smartphone stabilizer is already a good size.
How does it work
After balancing the camera on it, still off, just hold the power button for more than a second and it will make the movement to align the axes and be ready for use. If you want, you can interact very little with the buttons he brings, including, nor need to use his smartphone application, FeiyuON.
It has a few buttons, one for turning on and activating modes such as motion timelapse, another for focusing and starting shooting, and one that fixes the axes on a target as you move. While making the moves, you can choose to use the joystick, which does not have excellent hand grip but there is also nothing to complain about.
If you already have experience with other stabilizers, you should have no problem adapting.
To communicate from camera to gimbal, you use a cable. The kit we received came with connecting wires for cameras from three manufacturers, Canon, Panasonic and Sony. It also came with four 2200mA batteries and a charger for them. They are larger than usual and Feiyutech's own batteries, as well as the charger. Unfortunately, I did not find an estimate of the duration for the different bases in the manual or the FAQ page.
In addition, the model received here for testing came with two possibilities, you can choose to mount it for use with two hands and also with one.
A gimbal always keeps an axis in the same direction and without major interference from its surrounding axes. In this way, the mechanism works the surrounding axes without compromising the position of the center point. This way, it makes anyone using a gadget like this interfere as little as possible in the recording result.
Still, with the a2000, when you hold it and start recording movements, you may notice short, small swings that end up making the shot as unstable as it could be. Of course not every interesting take stabilized depends on your project. This is a tool for those who want to create smooth images.
Above is a video that explains very well the advantages of using a gimbal in filming. One of the comments made about having a person controlling where the gimbal is pointing with another control, something that is possible in the case of Feiyutech a2000 and creates several possibilities in the movie world.
It is evident that it is easier to control when it is used with the base which has two supports. Normally the smartphone stabilizers are already very tired when the device is heavy, now imagine how it is using a camera. Not as if you couldn't use it with the support of one hand, but much better with two. No wonder in films we see these stabilizers with more complex structures, with more grips.
He weighs 1.1kg in one-handed mode, and two-handed mode does not carry the weight specified in the manual. It supports cameras up to 2.5kg, adding her body, accessories and lens. For more weight than this, you will probably need an even more robust one.
A detail that needs to be commented is that even with the two grips, when you run with it, it is possible to notice a shake in one of the axes. That is, not perfect, but still the scene is much more stable. At hand, no matter how hard you try, the feeling is not the same.
You can also think of solutions to further reduce this problem, you can get in some vehicle, use roller skates, roller or something. Use your creativity.
When using the modes, highlight the functionality of the selfie mode, where you give three clicks on the mode button and the camera turns 180. This gives new possibilities, as a button that can be used in the middle of recording. In addition, with four clicks of the button you activate the move timelapse mode, which combines camera movement from point A to point B and matches the timelapse generated by the camera.
If you don't know how to use motion timelapse mode, I share a mini tutorial below
I only figured out how to use this last mode because I already tested another stabilizer from the same company, Feiyutech Vimble 2. At the time, I remember being surprised that it didn't bring this functionality, only to find out that it had this capability some time later. . I didn't find this information either in the manual and I didn't see it explained in the app, so I'll explain how to do it:
1 – Push the mode button four times, if you hear a beep it is a sign that he has understood what you want;2 – Position the camera in the desired direction at the starting point of the camera movement and click the mode button once more. If he has recognized the command give a sound signal as the first time;3 – Choose the second movement position and confirm, the camera should move to the starting point and start taking. I need you to set the timelapse mode on the camera, despite the cable connection, I couldn't get the gimbal to communicate with the camera to start recording automatically.4 – To choose the speed of your take you need to use the smarpthone app, Feiyu On and go to the Autorotation Mode settings.
The take time setting and the speed of the take is confusing, you may not understand at first. To begin with, the tutorial application provided by Feiyutech is quite different from the current one, so if you search Feiyutech's internet content you will probably see something old and that doesn't match what you have. As a measure of time, the software calculates hours / laps (or h / r = hours / round), being one 360 ??lap. It gives you the option of up to 8 hours for a full lap, giving you an understanding of how much the camera is. Move around to complete the take you need.
Although difficult to discover, this mode is very interesting and allows for differentiated footage that you can not do at hand. Also, even if it does not automatically start the video for you on the camera by plugging in the cable that comes in the box, at least you can use the player button to start recording the way you preset it on the camera.
During the tests we could not completely lift the camera and make it look up at a right angle, a placement that may be interesting depending on what you plan to record. Anyway, you can still play a lot with his camera movements and response times, as the app allows you to control some engine settings.
To close this article, I have to remember that this was our first device of its kind for DSLR cameras, although I have had plenty of experience with smarpthone stabilizers. The conclusion we draw is described throughout this article, especially in the excerpt we commented to whom he indicated. If you see that this type of gadget fits into a project of yours that you already have or plan to start, it will be of great help.
I need to comment that the Feiyutech a2000 is found for around $ 2500, sometimes more and sometimes less, a budget to consider. In any case, we also recommend that you check out the smartphone options, the Osmo Pocket, as well as competing handsets. The good part is that you have several options to see what fits best for what you are planning. I hope I helped and that you get good images!
