YouTube recommendations are toxic, says former Googler

Guillaume Chaslot, a former Google employee who worked on the YouTube recommendation algorithm, told The Next Web that the feature is not intended to bring users more information, but to pin them to the platform.

To generate recommendations, YouTube today uses artificial intelligence technology to customize calls to the interest of users. However, the only hidden goal is to keep the visitor browsing the site.

If artificial intelligence is well attuned, it could help you get what you want. That would be amazing, Chaslot said.

But the problem is that AI wasn't created to help you get what you want – it was created to make you addicted to YouTube. Recommendations are designed to waste your time.

Chaslot explained that the algorithm works by focusing on service time and presence, which would contribute to selling ads and not necessarily serving what the user wants.
