2018 Winter Paralympics win Google Doodle

Google celebrates the start of the 2018 Winter Paralympics with a Doodle on its home page. The animation illustrates, in each of the letters of the word «Google», the six sports practiced in the competition: alpine skiing, wheelchair curling, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, biathlon and sledding hockey. The opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games takes place this Friday, the 9th, in PyeongChang, South Korea. The Paralympics will end on the 18th of March.

The games have been running since 1976 and are held every four years, right after the Winter Olympics. This is the 12th edition of the competition and has a record number of athletes: there are 650 competitors, from 47 countries, competing for 80 medals.

The largest delegation this year is the United States, with 68 athletes. Russian athletes will participate in the Winter Games under a neutral flag, due to the doping cases that have already affected the country in the previous Olympics. North Korea will debut at the Paralympic Games with six athletes, repeating the historic participation of the North Koreans in the February Olympic Games.

Brazil will have three athletes in the competition: Aline Rocha and Cristian Ribera in cross-country skiing, and André Cintra in snowboarding. This will be the country’s second participation in the Paralympic Winter Games. The Brazilian debut at the event took place in Sochi, Russia, in 2014.
