2008 MacBook Pro is resurrected and turned into an Android PC thanks to Samsung DeX

Together with the Galaxy S8 and S8 +, Samsung launched earlier this year a very interesting device: the Samsung DeX.

With it, just connect the smartphones (or the phablet Note8) to an external monitor, which turns into a desktop running the Android system and can interact with a mouse / keyboard.

DeX's flexibility and ability to Kris Henriksen turned out to be a great joint to create a technological Frankenstein monster using an old MacBook Pro 2008: He opened the notebook, added batteries for more autonomy, put a fan to not overheat the machine, changed the LCD controller and made the keyboard / trackpad to work via USB.

In addition to replacing some components, he made room in the carcass by discarding all that was not needed. Then it attached a small stand to the side of the screen to easily connect and support the phone while using the machine.

That's it: Henriksen now has a portable computer running Android. From what we can see on the video, even a game can play very well. DeX doesn't support all Android apps, but those already optimized to work on larger screens do a great job.

If you want to know the whole process, it is explained on this page, with images.

a hell of a gambiarra? Certainly! But we can't deny that it was a really cool way to repurpose an old device and break news all over the world. 😛
