177 million domains at the end of 2008

The total number of domains registered last year reached 177 million, with 28 million to be registered in 2008, representing an increase of 16 percent over the previous year.

The numbers are from Verisign, which highlights the .com and.net domains as those that continue to be the most requested from year to year. Currently, these two endings, together with .org, already total 90.4 million addresses, while national domains, known as ccTLDs, already represent 71.1 million of the total registrations.

The national domains with the largest presence online is .cn, which belongs to China, followed by German (.de), United Kingdom (.uk), Holland (.nl) and Europe (.eu).
