Meet 10 swords that marked epoch in the history of games. From classic RPGs to Metal Gear Solid 4, discover the most powerful swords

Few weapons have the same relevance and attachment as swords. Whether in movies, games, literature and even in real life, these blades are so wrapped in legends that it’s hard not to be attracted to them.

In the real world, they continue to have an important presence. At AMAN – Agulhas Negras Academy, cadets receive the Marlin of Caxias when they become students of the institution, and when they graduate officers, they receive the Army Officer Sword. At the apex, upon becoming an army general, an officer also receives a replica of the Saber of Caxias. Always as a symbol of passage and the new function. But this is just one example of how swords are part of the world we live in today.

If in real life they fulfill largely symbolic functions, in the virtual world they swarm not only replicas of swords that actually existed but also others that are so sophisticated and powerful, only even in the memory of video games (and gamers) to exist.

Today we pay tribute to the history of swords and games. We select 10 of those classic weapons that marked an era in the lives of gamers around the world. In our selection we use a mix of aesthetics, power, history and relationship with the real world as criteria. Numbering is not in order of preference or importance, but merely organizational.

The list is certainly not unanimous and is subject to everyone’s preferences. In fact, we invite the reader to leave his honorable mentions in the comments and further enrich the list (10 is very little after all).

And without delay, let’s go to the first sword on the list, the Final Fantasy VIII gunblades!

1 – Final Fantasy VIII – Gunblade

At Gunblades emerged in Final Fantasy VIII, but are also present in other editions of the series. This is the fusion of a sword and a firearm. The version wielded by the game’s hero, Squall (figure above), is a mix of a revolver and a sword.

The Gunblade used by Seifer, Squall’s deadly enemy, is the mix of pistol and sword blade. The originals of the two characters did not fire projectiles. But in later games the Gunblades had that possibility added. THE melting of melee weapon with firearm resulted in one of boldest designs in RPG history.

2 – Final Fantasy VII – Buster Sword

The second on the list is Final Fantasy VII. The Iconic Buster Sword is practically sister to Cloud Strife, protagonist of the series. The sword is recognized not only by Final Fantasy lovers, many of whom list VII as the best in the series, but also by gamers from other stylistic places. The colossal sword ended up becoming a symbol of the game as a whole and, more broadly, of the entire famous Squaresoft series.

3 – Soulcablibur – Soul Edge

THE Soul Edge, as the name suggests, has as its aesthetic landmark an eye demonic at the base of your blade. Forged from the union between the spirit of the Soul Edge sword and the dormant body of Cervantes, one of the protagonists of the narrative, the sword has an original shape mix organic aspects with sharp steel wire.

It is a sword that owes its services to the evil side of strength. In the best style Lord of the Rings, the weapon dominates the mind and soul of the person who wields it, ultimately leading to insanity.

4 – The Legend of Zelda – Master Sword

The name of the main weapon Legend of Zelda says it all. It is the sword of swords, protector of Hyrule. Before receiving the title of Master Sword, was called by Goddess Sword, having been originally forged by the Goddess Hylia. Some of the powers that the sword confers on its owner are the ability to travel through time and to emit rays of power. After all, it is said that its blade is unbreakable.

5 – Gods of War – Blade of Olympus

THE Blade of Olympus is itself a protagonist of the mythological wars that run through Gods of War. The most “simple” made of the sword was to have carried out the war against the Titans, to be wielded by the also “simple” Zeus, God of the Gods and future father of Hercules.

The sword was brandished by both Zeus and the protagonist Kratos, who used it to defeat another Titan, Gaia. From time to time the sword appears in the series defining a mythological battle and could not be left out of the list.

6 – Devil May Cry – Rebellion

The protagonist of the Capcom has two firearms, but it is Rebellion sword that he resorts to most of the time. Dante, great name inspired by the author of Divine Comedy and his odyssey through hell, received the Rebellion from his father, Dark Knight Sparda.

The giant sword is a trademark of Devil May Cry and has a design that Dante Alighieri himself would not shy away from praising. Nothing better than the Rebellion to take along during a demon hunt.

7 – World of Warcraft – Frostmourne

Since the launch of World of Warcraft in 2004, gambling remains one of the most popular MMORPGs in the world. Swords are frequent and varied in their fantasy universe, but one in particular deserves to be remembered.

THE King Lich’s companion sword, Frostmourne, has the interesting ability to absorb the soul of its victims to increase its own power. After a few thousand opponents on the ground, you can imagine the power that the sword carries in its cold blade.

8 – Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots – Raiden’s Katana

In Metal Gear Solid 4, the protagonist Raiden owes much of his victories to his Katana sword. In the real world, Katana is a sword style typical of feudal Japan, used extensively by the famous Samurai. Even today they can be bought from Japanese artisans and companies.

In Raiden’s case, the sword is more than a Samurai blade. The weapon was subjected to a futuristic process in which alternating current and extremely high resonant frequencies were applied to the blade. It is said that after this electromagnetic baptism, sword has acquired the characteristic of weakening the molecular bonds of anything it touches. It is not by chance that Raiden’s Katana cuts anything with an ease of envy to any other weapon on that list.

9 – Masamune – Chrono Trigger

Masamune is not only the most powerful sword in the classic RPG Chrono Trigger. Several games, including Final Fantasy and Soulcalibur also feature eponymous sword appearances. It is a sword inspired by a Japanese craftsman who actually lived: Goro Nyudo Masamune. Hence its appearance in different games and contexts.

In Chrono Trigger the sword is responsible for cutting a mountain in half. It is also capable of absorbing the vital force of its opponents and healing its owner. In addition to being a paradigmatic weapon of the Squaresoft classic, it has a touch of reality for being inspired by the great Japanese craftsman.

10 – Prince of Persia – Time Dagger

Okay, okay. An Dagger, that is, a dagger, it is not exactly a sword. But still the blade that sets the tone in the Prince of Persia series deserves to be on a list of big swords, perhaps as a smaller sister, but no less important. In addition to being deftly wielded by the prince, the ability to control time is a central part of the game’s narrative, and ended up also spilling over to the cinema screens. Few swords have the power to control the weather and on top of that they are movie stars.

Conclusion

Certainly many other swords deserve to be on the list. Perhaps several swords from the same game. This weapon continues to fascinate and exert a profound influence on the development of new games, films and narratives. If in real life they are no longer carried in stylish sheaths as we walk around, in games they are part of the characters’ own lives.
