10 facts about using social media in Brazil that you need to know

A report revealed that Brazil is the third in the ranking of those who spend the most time on the Internet.

Brazilians spend an average of 9 hours surfing the web.

The country also appears among the first when it comes to time spent on social networks: it is more than 3 hours a day.

There are still other interesting data on the behavior of people on the network that deserve to be looked at carefully.

Like, for example, the fact that YouTube is the most accessed social network in the country, even surpassing Facebook in number of users.

Here are ten curious facts about the topic.

The study on the use of Internet and social networks in the world in 2017 was promoted by the We Are Social agency and the Hootsuite platform and took into account data provided by different sources.

It is worth noting that, in Brazil, the number of people with Internet access is 139.1 million (66% of the population), an index that did not change between 2016 and 2017.

However, even so, in the same period, there was an increase of 7 % of users on social networks.

1 – More than 9 hours daily using the Internet

The Brazilian spends, daily, 9 hours and 14 minutes surfing the Internet, through any device.

We are the third people in the world who spend the most time on the network.

First, there are Thais, with 9h38m, followed by Filipinos, with an average of 9h29m.

2 – More than 3 hours spent on the Internet are to access social networks

Yes, we spend an average of 3 hours and 39 minutes every day on social media.

Thus, we occupy the second place among the countries that use these platforms for the longest time, behind the Filipinos, who spend 3h57m daily and ahead of the Thais, who hold the 3h23m mark.

3 – 62% of our population is connected through social networks

That’s right: 130 million Brazilians use social networks.

Of these, 120 million access via their cell phones.

This number represents 57% of the total Brazilian population.

4 – YouTube is the page where the Brazilian spends more time per visit

According to the SimilarWeb ranking, we spend about 20 minutes and 33 seconds each time we access YouTube and, during that time, we access an average of 9.6 pages of the service.

Soon after, with 13 minutes and 55 seconds for access, comes Facebook, with 11.8 pages per visit.

5 – The most used social media is not Facebook

Surprisingly, YouTube surpasses the social network created by Mark Zuckerberg with regard to the percentage of users.

Of those interviewed by the Global Web Index, between 16 and 64 years old, 60% said they use the video platform, against 59% who said they use Facebook.

Third, comes the messenger WhatsApp, with 56%.

6 – 92% of Facebook users access the network via cell phone

Of the 130 million Brazilians who use Facebook monthly, 92% do so via smartphone.

The percentage is higher than the world average of 88%.

The data provided by the network itself, however, does not say that this access is performed exclusively by the mobile device.

7- The majority of Facebook and Instagram users in Brazil are women

Against the world average, in which the majority of users are men, here, 54% of those who have a Facebook profile declare themselves as women.

On Instagram, they dominate across the globe for very little (50.4%), while in Brazilian lands there are 59% of users who use the image sharing network.

8 – Video is the type of content with the highest percentage of engagement on Facebook

Over here, the videos posted on Facebook have an engagement percentage of 6.83% of the followers of the pages, followed by the shared links, which mobilize 6.46% (against the average of 5.23% and 3.90% in the rest of the world).

In third place, with 5.84%, are the photos.

9 – 27% of Brazilians are on Instagram

According to data released by the social network, we are 57 million users in the photo and video sharing network, which represents 27% of our population.

With regard to the percentage of users, which is also called the degree of penetration of the platform in the country, we are in 14th place.

However, when analyzing the gross number, Brazil appears in second place, just behind the United States, which has 110 million people using Instagram.

10 – Of the 5 most downloaded apps in Brazil in 2017, 4 are for social interaction

WhatsApp, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and Uber were, in that order, the smartphone applications with the most downloads in 2017, according to data from the App Annie website.

In the world, the top 5 is a little different: Facebook Messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Snapchat.
